Erik Mikkelson is the founder of RMR Wealth Advisors, LLC. As a family wealth advisor specializing in comprehensive financial planning, wealth management and family office services, Erik's goal is to enhance, utilize, preserve and protect your family's assets to meet your family's financial and lifetime desires, retirement needs and wealth preservation. As a Certified Financial PlannerTM professional, Erik selected this career to pursue his longtime passion and commitment to helping families with their vision for their financial future.
Working together with families, Erik and RMR's team work to determine clients’ financial planning needs, identify any concerns and obstacles, and explore strategies for achieving their desired results. In addition, and related to Erik’s financial background, is his experience in commercial, residential, investment, recreational and legacy real estate properties.
Erik’s reputation and values are based on always trying to “do the right thing”, with integrity, hard work, trust, and a genuine appreciation of people being at the core of his belief system. While serving families, his many years of private and corporate business experience serve him well. He has had careers in both the service and consumer products industries focused on strategic planning and project management. This very diversified background has helped prepare him to work with families and business owners dealing with complex operational, logistics, ownership, and succession planning projects. This may include assisting with the valuation, acquisition or sale of a business, complicated gifting or other wealth transfer strategies, as well as other business consultative services including due diligence coordination with specific industry, legal and taxation professionals.
Erik earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics, with a minor in Accounting from St. Olaf College (where he also played Division III college football). Prior to founding RMR Wealth Advisors, he was co-founder of Rich Mikkelson Rich Financial Advisors and before that a Vice President at Financial Planning Services, Inc.
Erik is also passionate about time with his wife Lisa and children, and their shared interests and hobbies. He and Lisa always look forward to adventures together outdoors, whether that is on a body of water or in the wilderness. Erik finds much value from time for thought, reflection and often new clarities for business and self while being quiet on the water or being in the woods. He also finds his continuously growing respect for and the pursuit of various challenges and opponents in nature one of life’s ultimate games of strategy, often finding overlapping skills required when helping others succeed in business and with their financial futures. In fact it was during one of these times in the woods that it occurred to him to pursue registering “For Your Financial Future®”, which is what drives the purpose, direction and actions of his firm while serving the families RMR is honored to have as clients.

Why Choose a CFA® Charterholder
Using excellent communication skills and a proactive approach, along with an emphasis on continuous improvement, I appreciate being able to work in a supportive environment where I can focus on contributing to extremely positive and long lasting client relationships. Previous to joining RMR, for 16 years I worked in the Customer Service field providing service measurement and data reporting to organizations across the United States, focusing on improving the customer experience in their businesses. Outside of work I keep busy with my four children, ranging from 20’s down to elementary age and now three grandchildren as well. Having them at different stages of life keeps life interesting; I enjoy every minute with all of them.
As the newest addition to the RMR team, I’m excited to bring my skills to select RMR clients. I have worked in Wealth Management for over a decade, always focused on building strong client relationships. My previous experience includes exposure to various services offered to high-net-worth clients including corporate trust management, portfolio management, specialized banking services, and (my most passionate pursuit) wealth planning and strategy. I am a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional and a Certified Private Wealth Advisor® practitioner. I have leveraged this knowledge from the textbook to the meeting table and am energized when I can help clients uncover and understand important details. Taking large, laborious and intimidating pieces of financial information and presenting them simply and sensibly brings me great satisfaction. I believe every client can make wise, informed and uniquely personal decisions when they are willing to share not only their financial information with a caring advisor, but also their personal aspirations and experiences. Working in RMR’s Family Office allows me to focus on this daily. I try to bring value to the big decisions as well as to the smaller, day-to-day decisions our busy clients make, attempting to do it more efficiently, strategically and thoughtfully.
Outside of the office, my husband and I enjoy spending time with our daughter. When the Wisconsin weather is warm, I spend as much time as possible outdoors. I keep myself busy during the cold months quilting, knitting and taking on many other craft projects.
I received the Registered ParaplannerTM certification from the College for Financial Planning in 2000. I have passed the Series 65 Uniform Investment Adviser law exam. Before joining RMR Advisors in 2009, I worked with Erik Mikkelson at Rich Mikkelson Rich Financial Advisors, and prior to that, Financial Planning Services, Inc. Enjoying detail and committed to excellence, I have directed overall operations and worked with compliance, client relations/account servicing, computer operations and business development. Primarily retired, I am available on an ongoing basis as needed. Outside of work, I love spending time with my family: my husband, children and thirteen grandchildren. In addition to being involved with church activities, I also enjoy watercolor painting.
